We are excited to share that the district is transitioning from School Loop to Synergy’s Gradebook Family and Student Portals in August 2017. This transition to Synergy will provide SFUSD’s students, families, teachers, and district staff with a unified system for real-time information on classes, grades, assignments, and more. While we know change can be challenging, we firmly believe the transition to Synergy Gradebook will increase efficiency for teachers and improve access for our students and families.

 

What does this mean for students and families?
Starting in August 2017, students and families will log in to Synergy’s Family and Student Portals to access student information related to attendance, assignments and grading. Our transition to Synergy is a response to feedback we have heard from school communities about the need to streamline the number of online systems we use for school-family communications.  Our team will be reaching out to families via parent groups and advisory councils, email, School Messenger, school websites, and School Loop to inform them of the change and provide opportunities to learn more and prepare for the transition in August 2017.  

 

Why are we making this change?

  • One login for attendance and grades for teachers and district staff
  • One login per family, regardless of the number of children and which school they attend
  • Greater clarification and standardization of SFUSD grading practices and policies
  • Increased security and confidentiality of student and parent information
  • Actionable real-time student performance information
  • Improved accessibility for individuals with disabilities
  • Improved translation options

What will happen with School Loop?
School Loop will continue to be used for school websites next year. However, teachers, students and families will use Synergy instead of School Loop for other communications and  information about grades and assignments.

 

We are confident that Synergy Gradebook is another exciting step to leverage technology to increase engagement in our school communities, enhance data integrity and security, and better position us for 21st century learning, as outlined in Vision 2025 and our Digital District Plan.

The High School Outreach Conference (HSOC) is an annual event hosted at UCSF that aims to get students excited about college and professional programs. We bring together volunteers from various schools at UCSF, including dental, nursing, medical, graduate, pharmacy, and physical therapy programs, to host high school students joining us from all around the Bay Area.

The students begin the day listening to motivational speakers to learn more about the journey to a career in the health sciences, all about financial aid, and more. Throughout the remainder of the day, students have the opportunity to get their hands dirty by participating in hands on demos hosted by each of the professional schools. HSOC is a day for fun, friends, and sparking passion in the next generation of health care providers!

This year, our event will take place on Saturday, April 29, from 8:30 am – 4 pm. This all day event is organized just for high school students, and we would love to have Lowell High School students join us. Last year we hosted over 300 students to learn about higher education and get hands on experiences in. The Science & Health Education Partnership is excited to announce a new NSF-funded summer program for high school teachers and students as part of the Center for Cellular Construction. This two-week workshop will engage student/teacher teams in design challenges as they learn together about the field of cellular engineering.

What is Cellular Engineering? 

 

Cellular Engineering is an emerging discipline poised to harness the untapped potential of living cells to solve complex societal problems and benefit humankind. The field will apply our burgeoning knowledge of how cells (and systems of cells) are built, make decisions, and accomplish tasks to develop new cell-based technologies.

Cellular Engineering by its nature is interdisciplinary and creating solutions like those listed above will require a new generation of scientists – those who enjoy tinkering, building, and figuring out how things work; and who are driven to make the world a better place.

Join us for the Cellular Construction Workshop 

  • Understand cells as biological machines
  • Combine engineering and computer science to understand cellular behavior
  • Recognize the cell as a system that can be programmed
  • Use robots to solve challenges similar to those faced by cells
  • Program cells to solve real world problems
  • Experience problem-based learning modules that integrate NGSS engineering practices and life sciences curriculum

Who?
High school science teachers and students
Students must have completed 10th grade and a biology course by the start of the workshop.

Preference given for schools with both teachers and students applying to participate.

July 24-August 4, 2017, 9 am-3 pm daily

  • Teachers will be paid $1200, students will be paid $900 for completion of all program requirements.
  • In order to participate, students MUST be nominated by a high school science teacher (teachers can nominate up to three students).
  • The Center for Cellular Construction is committed to broadening participation in science – and strongly encourages nominations of students from groups underrepresented in the sciences.

Chevron will be selecting 20 outstanding high school students (rising juniors and rising seniors are eligible to apply) from across the U.S. to attend the Chevron sponsored summer educational camp, "Frontiers of Energy Resources", hosted at the University of Southern California and scheduled for June 25 – 30, 2017.
 
Selected students are responsible for their own transportation to USC. While on campus, room and board will be covered by Chevron. This competitive summer program, in its 9th year, will introduce students to the science foundation of energy resources.  They will also learn about the career possibilities in energy resources fields. Please refer to the attached flyer.
 
Applicants should visit http://cisoft.usc.edu/uscchevron-summercamp/ to access the online application and download the teacher recommendation form. The application deadline is April 7, 2017.

The Stanford Horizon Scholars Program offers up to 15 low-income, high-achieving, Bay Area high school students the opportunity to attend High School Summer College at little to no cost.

 

Horizon Scholars attend High School Summer College as commuting students. In addition to a generous financial aid package, Horizon Scholars have access to special programming during the summer and, as alumni of the program, quarterly events during the rest of the academic year.

The Stanford Institutes of Medicine Summer Research Program (SIMR) is an eight-week program in which high school students from diverse backgrounds are invited to perform basic research with Stanford faculty, postdoctoral fellows, students and researchers on a medically-oriented project. The goals of the program include increasing interest in biological sciences and medicine in high school students, helping students to understand how scientific research is performed, and increasing diversity of students and researchers in the sciences.

 

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SUMMER 2017 PROGRAM

All of the following requirements must be met (no exceptions):

- Students must currently be juniors or seniors as of the fall of 2016 and must be in the graduating class of 2017 or 2018. 

- Students must also be 16 years old or older by the start of the program (June 12, 2017).  

- Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents with a green card in order to apply.

Important Note:  The selection process will heavily favor local (Bay Area) students. Please visit the FAQ for more information.  Also, students must be able to start the program on June 12, 2017.
