What are Special Units?

Special Units

Special Units are teams within the JROTC Program that compete annually in SFUSD JROTC competitions, with the exception of the Academic Bowl and Leadership Symposium teams, who compete in a nation-wide JROTC competition. All Special Units within JROTC are optional to join, however all members must be enrolled in the JROTC program. In addition to competing, they participate in various events ranging from school wide to city wide parades as well other various functions. Lowell currently has nine Special Unit teams, each competing during different seasons.

All Special Units within JROTC are optional to join, however all members must be enrolled in the JROTC program. The teams compete in either the Annual Fall Competition or at the Annual 91st Drill Competition. In addition to competing, they participate in various events ranging from school wide to city wide parades as well other various functions. The fall competing teams are Drum Corp, Squad Drill, Color Guard, and Guidon. The spring competing teams are Drill Platoon, Exhibition Drill Team or Girls Drill Team, our Flag Drill Team or Boy's Drill Team and our Raider Challenge Team.  The summer competing teams are our Academic Bowl and Leadership Symposium Teams.
