2017 Dong Lieu Memorial Science Prize for Lowell Students - deadline extended to 2/23/17

The Dong Lieu Memorial Science Prize is awarded annually to Lowell student(s) to cover or defray costs of applying to or attending a summer science program. Last year, five Lowell students had their summer application costs covered or their program tuition fully or partially paid.

This is a cash prize awarded to a current Lowell student or graduating senior sponsored by the Lowell Alumni Association each year in memory of Dong Lieu, the father of a Lowell alumnus from the class of 1973.  Mr. Lieu was an immigrant farmer from China who never completed high school.  His 4 sons all hold doctoral or master degrees and have become physicians, college professors, and businessmen.  The intent of the award is to allow a student to take a college course for credit or participate in an enrichment program in math or science during the summer.  Winners will receive up to $1000(+) cash prize and be recognized by having their name on a plaque that will be displayed in an exhibit near the science classrooms.  The award was endowed in 2005.  Awards will be made annually in the spring.

The award is available to any continuing Lowell High School student or graduating senior who has completed at least 1 science course at Lowell, has done well, and has had to overcome at least 2 of the following hardships in order to succeed:

  • Moderately low income in relation to family size
  • Very low income in relation to family size (counts as 2 hardships)
  • Primary language spoken at home is not English
  • Neither parent holds a college degree (AA or higher or foreign equivalent)
  • Single parent family
  • Moderate or severe physical handicap
  • Other hardships as deemed applicable by the Lowell Alumni Association

Application Process

There is a link to a short online application on the Lowell High School homepage.  Early application is encouraged for full consideration.  The Lowell Alumni Association, a representative from the Lieu family, and head of the Lowell science department will determine the winner(s).

Final Note

This is an award created exclusively for Lowell students by a former Lowell student.  Go for it and apply today!
