What Should I Know About Suicide?
What should I do?
My friend is talking about hurting him/herself.
My friend is depressed.
Maybe you are the person who is has been feeling down.
You as a fellow student do not need to have all of the answers. You can help your friend and you can help yourself.
On a school day bring your friend to the Lowell Wellness Center or talk to a trusted teacher. Or you can talk to the Wellness staff who will listen to your concerns and approach your friend, providing help. (The Wellness Center is located in both room 129 and in T-14 on the Lowell campus. The phone numbers are x 3129 and x 3030.)
On a weekend or any other time, call the San Francisco Suicide Prevention a 24-hour hotline that is staffed 24/7. 415/781-0500. www.sfsuicide.org This hotline is available to whoever wants to talk, even when the issue it is not as heavy as suicide. Look at their website! It is very useful.
You can show concern for your friend’s feelings but talk of suicide is too much to handle on your own.
Use adults to provide support and direction for your friend. Tell your friend to pause. Take action by going for help. Things will get better. Help is available.
What about confidentiality?
For most student concerns, matters discussed in the Wellness Center are kept confidential. Everyone feels better when s/he speaks out loud, hears what comes out of his own mouth and hears a response from a caring person. Feeling understood is a major step towards mental health.
However, when safety is in doubt, confidentiality is put aside in order to keep the young person safe. This means that if a person plans to hurt himself, plans to hurt someone else, or has been hurt by another person the law requires that confidentiality be broken in order to keep the young person safe.
